Assumption, Assuming Quotes – What Does The Bible Say About Making Assumptions?

Don’t Assume Your Problems Can’t Be Solved
John 6:5-7
When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” (NRSV)

Don’t Assume A Person Won’t Turn To God –
The Story of Rahab The (Former) Prostitute or Harlot

Joshua 2:8-13
Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.

When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. “Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” (TNIV)

Don’t Assume The Worst In Other People
1 Chronicles 19:2-3
“David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?” (TNIV)

Lessons From The Story of Job
A classic example of arriving at the wrong conclusion based on the wrong assumptions is found in the The Story of Job. Let’s be careful not to jump to conclusions even when things appear to be clearly a certain way – For instance, in this story, Job’s friends applied a correct principle in the wrong manner by making the assumption that Job’s suffering came as a result of his sin or disobedience to God.

May God grant us the wisdom and the patience to resist from making the wrong assumptions about situations we encounter. Amen.
