Words Matter. Your Words Matter. Our Words Matter!
5/6/23
Good Morning, Dear Friends! 💕😊
I pray all is well with you and your family! I just finished taking a shower, and as I enjoyed my shower, I made a mental note to email my son’s senior high school counselor to say a heartfelt THANK YOU. I want him to know what a difference his words made!
It happened fall last year. My just turned 17 year old son was getting ready for college applications, and every family was required to have at least one meeting with the school counselor to go over the college application process. My husband and I arrived at the meeting and we went over a number of items with the counselor. At some point, we got to the topic of what colleges my son wanted to apply to. My son mentioned the schools he had in mind – including his number one dream school, which happens to be the best institution in the nation for his degree. He also mentioned some other excellent schools he had plans to apply to, but mentioned that the number one school would be his “reach” school, meaning, he wasn’t sure he could get in, but he would try.
You know what his counselor said? Something along the lines of — “I don’t think that school is a reach school for you. I think it is well within your grasp!” He said it matter-of-factly. He truly believed my son could do it. He went on to say many other helpful and encouraging things for my son to consider as he embarked on this task.
I was so encouraged by those words! As a family, we had prayed that God would lead and guide my son to whatever school was best for him, so I was definitely not hung up on any particular university choice for my son. I just wanted God’s best for him. But hearing those positive words of affirmation spoken over my son was so encouraging to us all. And guess what? My son got accepted into the school a few months later, and will be heading there to start his college career in the fall, by God’s grace. Praise God!
The second example that comes to mind about how much our words matter is also regarding powerful and positive words & declarations spoken about and over my son, this time by my younger sister (his aunt). My son was preparing for a major exam (the PSAT), and the results of this annual exam determines who gets a national merit scholarship for college. The amount of the scholarship is actually not that significant, but students who qualify for this award are set apart (in a great way) during college applications. The monetary award is small, but the scholarship potentially opens many doors! My son prepared hard for the exam, and he asked us to pray along for success on the exam. I asked my sisters to kindly pray along! My sisters all had very encouraging and kind words to offer, and I am sincerely grateful to them all! Then one of my sisters said something I don’t think I will ever forget: “That scholarship has his name on it!” 😊🎉✨🙌 Again, those words just brought up a well of encouragement in me. We continued to trust God for the best, and he did qualify for the national merit scholarship. Praise God!
The final example I would like to share is concerning positive words of encouragement and affirmation spoken over me and my husband. I remember another sister telling me that she thinks my husband and I are such great parents! She said we are two of the best parents she knows 🙂 She gave specific examples, and showered me with so much love and encouragement. Wow. I don’t think she realizes what a difference her words have made and continue to make, especially on days when I feel inadequate, or feel like I am falling short. I am beyond grateful – Praise God!
I have so many more examples of words spoken over me and about me, some good and some bad – and friends, our words truly matter! I have talked to people who have had negative words spoken over them, and they are still trying to unpack the effects of those words decades later! I have also talked to people who have had positive words spoken over them, which changed the trajectories of their lives, in such a profound way! Our words matter!
Dear Friends, please remember that your words matter. Please think before you speak, and by God’s grace, let everything you say be good and helpful! Focus on the good, Focus on speaking encouraging words, and focus on speaking words that will build others up, not tear them down!
Please don’t make crude or insensitive jokes and comments, saying “just kidding!”
Sure, there is time for everything, and we may need to say some tough words sometimes – May God grant us wisdom! But may we always remember that words matter, your words matter, our words matter!
Words spoken to others matter. Words spoken to yourself also matter.
ACCEPT and AFFIRM positive words spoken over you! REJECT any negative words spoken over you! Don’t give the devil a foothold in your life! You are not a garbage receptacle for negative words, reject them calmly and move on with your life!
Declare God’s word over your life. Confess God’s word over your life. Be careful and intentional about the words you say! Speak Positive Affirmations From The Bible over yourself and your loved ones. Stop criticizing yourself. Speak kind words to yourself and others! Always Remember ~ Words Matter. Your Words Matter. Our Words Matter!
So help us God, AMEN.
