What I want from God (for myself and for you)
“We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.” ~ Colossians 1:9b, NLT
I read the above line of scripture this morning, and I might as well have written the words myself. Yes, this is what I want from God – for myself, and for you!
Complete Knowledge of God’s will.
Spiritual Wisdom and Understanding.
Yes, Yes, Yes!!!
The next verse shows us why this is so important for our Christian walk:
Colossians 1:10, NLT Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. (Amen!)
We recently explored While we wait for Jesus – we were made for more.
While I wait, while you wait, here is what I want from God:
May God grant us complete knowledge of His will, and
May he grant us spiritual wisdom and understanding!
May our lives always honor and please the Lord, and
May our lives produce every kind of good fruit!
May we keep on growing as we learn to know God better and better!
As God leads us one step at a time, May we trust and obey!
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
About a year ago, I remember seeking God about a specific matter. I had been asking God to show me what to do about a direction I really wanted to take. One night as I lay down in bed, half asleep.. I prayed again: Lord, I want your perfect will to be done! Teach me your will and show me your way! All of a sudden I felt like I heard God speak audibly to me. I instantly became wide awake! The words I heard: “Have you done what I have already asked you to do?”
Ouch. That brought me right back to my senses. There was something very specific I know God had placed on my heart to do. I had put it on hold for several months, and as of that night, I still had not done it… for one reason or another… And here I was seeking God on another matter! Saying how much I wanted His will to be done in my life! It suddenly became clear to me how absurd I was being. Thankfully, I repented, and by God’s grace I immediately started doing exactly what God had placed on my heart. No more excuses!!!
So today, I am reminded that yes, I want complete knowledge of God’s will, and I want spiritual wisdom and understanding. Yes, I want to continue to grow in God every day. But first, I have to continually do my part as well! What am I doing with what God has already revealed to me? What am I doing with what I know for certain He wants me to do, no matter how “little” it is?
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much…” ~ Luke 16:10, ESV
“Learn as you go along what pleases the Lord.” ~ Ephesians 5:10, TLB
“So we make it our goal to please him…” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:9a, NIV

As we continually seek complete knowledge of God’s will, Are we being faithful with what He has already revealed to us? Is our #1 goal to please God? Are we being faithful in the little things?
As we seek spiritual wisdom and understanding in the “bigger things”, have we applied spiritual wisdom and understanding in the “little things”?
This is the only way we can grow in God. That’s it! If we are not faithful in the little things, we can never grow in spiritual wisdom and understanding… we will keep going around in circles. (God forbid!)
Prayer
Thank you Lord, once again for showing up! You have said that if we seek you with all of our hearts, we will find you (Jer 29:13). Dear Lord, help us to seek you with all of our hearts. We want more! We want you! We want to honor and please you in all we do. We want to produce every kind of good fruit! We want to grow deeper in our walk with you! We want to get to know you better every day! Help us Lord, to be faithful in the little things. Help us to trust and obey, even when we don’t see the big picture yet. Help us to rely on you to help us live the lives that you desire for us to live! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Colossians 1:11-14, NLT We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. (Amen.)
