Speak Lord, I’m Listening.

Speak Lord, I’m Listening.
Key Verse ~ 1 Samuel 3:9, NIV
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’

Yesterday, my 9 year old asked me a question: “If you ever hear God speaking to you, how do you know it’s not just your mind making it up? How do you know it’s really God speaking to you?”

I told him that it’s definitely a valid question, because sometimes even adults can be unsure too. I also told him if we keep doing our own parts, seeking to obey God with all our hearts; if we keep practicing seeking God and making ourselves available for God to speak to us, then God will speak to us, and we will become better and better at hearing God’s voice and knowing God’s voice.

Sometimes we make mistakes… but that’s ok, because if we keep trusting God, we will keep getting better and better at recognizing God’s voice. I told him of the story of Samuel and Eli, how God started speaking to Samuel when he was a young boy. Samuel didn’t initially recognize that it was God calling him or speaking out to him. Eli explained to him and advised him to respond to God’s calling by saying “Speak Lord, I’m listening.” Samuel grew and matured, and became very good at recognizing God’s voice. He was a Prophet of God.

This morning, I thought about my conversation with my 9 year old, and I went back to read the story in 1 Samuel 3. Verse 3 (NASB) says: “Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor had the word of the LORD yet been revealed to him.”

When God first spoke to Samuel, he did not recognize His voice because he “did not yet know the Lord, nor had the word of the Lord yet been revealed to him.”

I am also reminded of the following scriptures:
“This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24, NIV)

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33, NLT)

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, KJV)
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13, ESV)

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8, NIV) See also: 16 Encouraging Bible Verses about Hearing God’s Voice

Prayer
Thank you Lord, for reminding us that you desire that we know you, and you want to reveal your word to us. Help us to grow and mature in you every day, so that we may know you more and more and that your word may continually be revealed to us. Help us to seek you with all of our hearts, not only when we face difficulties or when we are about to make big decisions. Help us to seek you in everything, and help us to make ourselves available to hear from you.

We thank you Lord for the blessing of children and loved ones. Please help us to get our priorities straight. Help us to do our part in telling the next generation and teaching them your way. Let our children seek you and know you, please reveal yourself to them!

Dear Lord, please let all of our lives be a continuous prayer – May our lives be a continuous relationship with you. Help us to realize that even when we make mistakes, by your grace, we can rise up again! Help us to always remember that you love us deeply, and that you want to help us to mature in every way. Help us to grow, Help us to mature, Help us make wise choices, Help us learn from our mistakes, and Help us become the people you want us to be. And Lord, let our hearts always sincerely say: “Speak Lord, I’m listening.” Amen.
