Obedience is the proof of faith
Dear Friends, I have this distinct thought on my mind today: Obedience is the proof of our faith in God.
We can profess our faith in God, our love for God, and our strong belief in God, but if our actions say otherwise, our words mean nothing.
John 14:15, NLT If you love me, obey my commandments.
1 John 5:3, NLT Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
2 John 1:6, NIV And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. (emphasis mine)
John 13:35, NLT Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
How do we show that we truly have faith in God?
How do we show that we truly love God?
How do we show that we’re truly trusting God?
It’s very simple – By Obeying God.
We prove our faith by loving others, as God has commanded us to.
Dear Friends, love is not optional for us!
We prove our faith when we obey God’s specific instructions for us.
We prove our faith when we trust God in obedience, even if everyone else is doing something else.
We prove our faith when we obey God in every area of our lives, even when no one else is watching.
We prove our faith when we truly live our lives for an audience of one – GOD.
I remember singing this song as a child: “Obedience is the very best way, to show that we believe.” Wow. It’s so so true. Obedience is the very best way to show that we believe in God.
Like the Bible says: “Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17). If we say we have faith but we are not acting in obedience to God, then our faith is “dead”, i.e. it’s like it doesn’t even exist.
James 2:17, NIV In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
Indeed, Obedience is the proof of faith: Obedience is the best proof of our faith in God!
John 15:10-12, NLT When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3, NLT If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
Psalm 119:60, NLT I will hurry, without delay, to obey your commands. (AMEN)
Dear Lord, Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us, reteach us, remind us, and help us. We want our faith to be alive and active. We don’t want to have “dead faith”! We want our actions to prove that we believe in you. We want our actions to prove that we love you. Help us to obey you in every way – being faithful in the little things and in the big things too! Help us to obey you even when no one is watching. Help us to shine for you! Help us to make you smile! Help us to live our lives honoring and glorifying God. Dear Lord, help us to excel in Obedience – Help us to excel in LOVE! Amen.
