A couple of days ago, we explored the topic What is my job as a Christian? We talked about how to be an effective and growing Christian, we need to abide in Jesus. So how do we abide in Jesus, and allow him to fully dwell in us? It boils down to this: Make Jesus your first priority by spending time with him daily.
The song “Read Your Bible Pray Every Day” we sang so often as children comes to mind:
Read Your Bible, Pray Every Day,
Pray Every Day, Pray Every Day,
Read Your Bible, Pray Every Day,
If you want to grow!
At the end of the day, it really is that simple. We abide and grow in Jesus when we spend time with Jesus. When we read our Bible, asking and trusting the Holy Spirit to give us understanding as we read, we learn more about Jesus’ character and His will for our lives, and we grow in God every day.
Psalm 119:105, ESV Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:11, ESV I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:130, NIV The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
When we seek God in prayer every day (remembering that prayer is a 2-way communication, and trusting God to teach us how to pray), we learn to communicate with God by expressing our thanksgiving, requests, worship and adoration to Him. We also learn to hear God clearly when He speaks to us. When we pray, we learn God’s will for our lives, and we grow in God every day.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
Jeremiah 29:11-13, NIV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Philippians 4:6-7, ESV Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Bible Verses about the Power of Prayer
Spending time with Jesus is the most important thing we need to grow as Christians.
Jesus reiterated this at the home of Martha and Mary, in Luke 10:38-42:
Luke 10:41, NIV “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Do you want to abide in Jesus? Do you want to grow in Jesus?
Make Jesus First in Your Life => Make Jesus your Priority => Read Your Bible, and Pray Every Day.
It all starts here. The more time we spend with Jesus, the more we discover Jesus, and the more we will reflect his goodness and character. First things first – A personal relationship with Jesus Christ!
John 15:4, ESV Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
