Knowing the value of things.

Knowing the value of things.

9/2/17
Yesterday, my 10 year old son reminded me about the importance of knowing the value of things.

He was in the mood for chick-fil-A :), and he asked me if we could all go to chick-fil-A for lunch. I thought about it and said hmm, not today – it’s not in my budget for today. Maybe another time.

He thought about it some more and said: “Mom, why don’t I take you and my brother out for a treat for a change? You and Daddy always pay when we go out. Why don’t I spend some of my own money and take us out today?” (He had some money left over from his birthday gifts).

I thought about his offer and initially felt a little hesitant accepting. I mean, why should he be spending his money on us? We had never done anything like this before. I initially thought about saying – you know what, it’s ok, you keep your money, let’s just go to chick-fil-A, I’ll pay for it! 😀 But then I decided: Hmm.. actually, if he wants to treat his mom and brother to lunch, why not? (My husband was at work, and the boys had the day off from school.)

So off we went, to chick-fil-A! We ordered our food and were waiting to be called. Next thing I know, my son comes to me and says “Thank you Mommy!” Oh honey, I should be the one thanking you, I said. You are treating us to lunch, so we should be thanking you! His reply? “yes, I know. But seeing how much all this stuff costs makes me realize how much money you spend every time you take us out to eat. I didn’t realize it was this expensive! Thank you Mommy!” He said all this with a huge smile on his face!

Wow. Wow. Wow. I certainly was not expecting that. I gave him a big hug, and said you are welcome! and Thank you!!! I was so so thankful. My babies are growing up! Praise God! See also: The Power of An Encouraging Word

What happened yesterday reminded me that we may think we know the value of things, but we may not really appreciate the value of something until we have to “spend it” ourselves.

We may not truly appreciate the value of money until we have to spend our own money.
We may not truly appreciate the value of time until we have to use our own time to do something.
We may not truly appreciate the value of someone’s sacrifices if we have never had to make those sacrifices ourselves.

On a related note, we may not truly appreciate the value of what God has placed in us, the value of our intrinsic talents, gifts and abilities, if we do not stop to think about how so very carefully God has created every single one of us, to fulfill a certain purpose on this earth! Dear Friends, We are not mass produced… God created us individually, God loves us individually, and God deals with us individually!

Psalm 103:2, NLT Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Psalm 139:13, NLT You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:14, NIV I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Psalm 119:73, ESV Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. See also: Becoming who God created you to be

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for teaching us, reteaching us, and growing us. Thank you Lord for showing up in every area of our lives. We appreciate you Lord! Please help us to know the value of things. Help us to keep learning and growing every single day! Help us to regularly reflect on and appreciate the value of the people in our lives, and the value of things they do for us – be it encouragement, time, or kindness. Help us to regularly appreciate the value of God’s great love, God’s sacrifice, and God’s provision…. and help us to act like it!

And Lord, please help us to regularly reflect on and appreciate the value of the gifts and talents you have placed in us, and may we continually use them for your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
