How to pray when you don’t know what to say…

Dear Friends: Do you want to pray but don’t know what to say? Do you want to pray but don’t know where to start? Do you want to talk to God, but don’t know how to pray? Maybe you have a lot on your mind, but you don’t know what words to say?

Prayer when you don’t know what to say
(i.e. How to pray when you don’t know what to say.)
Do you know the Lord’s Prayer? The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Here are the words:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever,
Amen. See also: Bible Verses about the Lord’s Prayer

When you don’t know what to say, please pray the Lord’s prayer as is (see above), then try praying the Lord’s prayer using your own words (see below). Praying is simply communicating with God. You can pray anytime and anywhere, for any length of time (even for 1 second, e.g. by calling the name of Jesus!). See also: Bible Verses about the Power of Prayer

Going line by line through the Lord’s Prayer, we have:

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.”
~ In your own words, say hello to God, and praise His name. Please remember that your words do not need to be fancy – Just use your regular every day words to say “Good Morning Jesus”, or/& “Thank you God!” Thank God for anything you are thankful for. Tell God how much you appreciate Him. You can also sing songs of praise and worship to God. If you don’t know any songs of praise or none come to mind, you can go to YouTube and search for e.g. “Christian songs of praise and worship.” You will find several great options, many have lyrics included so you can sing along.

“And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
Is there anyone you need to forgive today? Is there anyone you have a grudge against? If yes, ask God to help you to forgive, let go, and move on. God wants to help! Ask God to help you to forgive others as he has forgiven you in the past, as he continues to forgive you now, and as he will still forgive you in the future. “Amen.”
~ Amen means “so let it be.” Yes, and amen to our prayers!

Finally, please remember: Prayer is a two-way street. Remember to often take time to be quiet in the presence of the Lord, and let God speak to you. The more you practice seeking God, the more you will recognize how to hear His voice when He speaks to you. If you ever believe God is telling you something, write it down so you don’t forget.
