Wisdom is vital: Get Wisdom at any cost, “Get wisdom at all cost.”
Proverbs 4:7, NIV The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
James 1:5, ESV If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Proverbs 4:7, ISV Wisdom is of utmost importance, therefore get wisdom, and with all your effort work to acquire understanding.

We visited my parents’ church a while back, and enjoyed a pleasant time of fellowship with loved ones we hadn’t seen in a while. They happened to have a visiting pastor that day, and during his sermon, he was giving an illustration to drive home a lesson he was teaching us. In his analogy, a very wealthy man visited a poor neighborhood. I guess the visiting pastor wanted the audience to relate with the story perfectly, so he asked my parents’ pastor (the host pastor) to give him examples of dirt poor towns/neighborhoods in their home state.

My parents’ pastor cheerfully responded (I’m paraphrasing) – “I don’t really know too much about the poorest neighborhoods, but I can help you out with examples of upscale neighborhoods if you want.” Everyone, including the visiting pastor, burst out laughing. The point was graciously taken. The visiting pastor went ahead and told us his story without naming any specific “poor” neighborhoods.

I thought the response of the host pastor was such a great example of wisdom in action! Had the pastor responded with named examples of poor or downtrodden neighborhoods, he would have probably have made some people in the audience sad or even offended. Totally unnecessary. He did not make anyone feel bad by naming “dirt poor” neighborhoods on the stage, but he wisely responded to the visiting pastor in such a pleasant and respectful way as well. I discussed what happened with my parents, and my mom thought he must have been Spirit-led. I couldn’t agree more!

The above practical example of wisdom in everyday life reminded me of what happened with Jesus and the Adulterous woman (John 8:1-11). In summary, this woman had been caught in the act of adultery, and her co-offender, a man, was for some reason not put under the same judgment as she was. A crowd was ready to stone her to death. They knew Jesus would not want her to be stoned, and “they were trying to trap [Jesus] into saying something they could use against him.” (John 8:6, NLT)

Jesus came to her rescue and demonstrated profound wisdom. He did not argue with the law or their obvious bias and hypocrisy, and he did not allow himself to fall into their wicked trap. Jesus simply said to them: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7b, NIV)

Jesus’ extremely wise statement shut the woman’s accusers up! They ALL dropped their stones and walked away!
John 8:9-11, ESV When they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more. Another Example of Wisdom in the Bible ~ The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders:
Godly Wisdom => Build Your House on the Rock
Matthew 7:24-27, ESV Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. Dear Lord, We desire wisdom! We want to be shining examples of applying godly wisdom in everyday life. Please fill us with your Holy Spirit, and grant us wisdom in everything we do, to the glory of your name – Amen.
