Preamble
First, What does it mean to walk in God’s will? What does it mean to walk in God’s ways? I believe walking in God’s perfect will means we make a daily choice to live our lives honoring and glorifying God, no matter what, with God’s help. Related: What is God’s will for my life?
Walking in God’s will means that:
Every day, we make the choice to seek God, obey God, and please God.
Every day, we make the choice to honor and glorify God.
Every day, we make the choice to do everything in love.
Every day, we make the choice to put God first.
Every day, we make the choice to commit everything into God’s hands.
Every day, we make the choice to follow Christ, even when we don’t understand, even when it seems like everybody else is doing something else, even when obeying God comes at a personal cost.
Every day, we make the choice to trust that God knows best.
So, How to walk in God’s will; How to walk in God’s ways; How to walk in obedience with God? I woke up with these thoughts on my mind this morning. Here are 3 ways I believe we can consistently walk in God’s perfect will. I pray that God Himself will continually minister His truth to us all!
3 Simple Ways to Walk in God’s Perfect Will
#1 Gentleness
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” ~ James 3:17, ESV
When we are gentle, we do not run ahead of God. When we are gentle, we are not aggressive. To be aggressive means to “pursue one’s aims and interests forcefully…” (Source: Oxford Dictionary)
When we are aggressive, we don’t give God a chance to interrupt our plans. Conversely, when we are gentle, we wisely allow God to lead us, AND, we allow God to “butt in” at any time if we ever happen to veer off course. Being gentle does not mean we are paralyzed to inaction – absolutely not! Being gentle just means that no matter what we set out to do, we are not aggressive and out of control. In our deepest of hearts, we still allow God to have #1 control. When we are gentle, we allow God to steal the show, and God blesses our efforts to obey him.
#2 Humility
“…God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” ~ James 4:6, ESV
“Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” ~ Matthew 11:29b, NLT
God cannot lead us to walk in his ways if we are proud. We can only walk in God’s will if we are humble. When we are humble, we seek God’s face continually. When we are humble, we have a teachable spirit, and allow God to teach us anyway he chooses. When we walk in humility, we are always ready to learn! When we are humble, we remember that God knows all and sees all – He sees the big picture, and He sees the end from the beginning. When we are humble, we realize that even when it seems like we have it all figured out, the ultimate wisdom belongs to God. When we walk in humility, we ask God for wisdom. We do not jump to conclusions, or stick to our preconceived notions. Instead, we continually defer to God, trusting that He is all wise and all knowing. When we are humble, success to us means knowing God’s will, and doing it. And God will honor this desire!
