Thinking about meekness in our world today – What does it mean to be meek?
Looking up the word “meek” in the dictionary as well as reflecting on our general usage of this word – meekness appears to be a negative thing, practically synonymous with “weak”. Some dictionaries (e.g. Merriam Webster) describe being meek as being “deficient in spirit and courage”, “not strong”… i.e., a sign of weakness by world definition. Meekness is often viewed as being a door mat, being so weak and afraid that you allow people to walk all over you – passive, timid, and lacking confidence.
But What is the Bible Definition of Meekness? (Meekness Bible Definition & Meaning)
Looking at the Bible, we see that Biblical Meekness is not a sign of weakness – quite the contrary! When we dig into what the Bible says about Meekness and Being Meek, we see that meekness is not weakness, meekness is a sign of strength! Meekness in the Bible is submitting to God and allowing God to use us as He wills!
Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Exploring the Greek word for “Meek” when literally translated, also shows that the Biblical definition of meekness is certainly not weakness. The biblical meaning of the word “meek” is strength under control, or power under control. Strong’s Bible Concordance refers to Biblical Meekness as “exercising God’s strength under His control” – i.e. demonstrating power without undue harshness.”
I remember the hymn I used to sing as a child – “Gentle Jesus, meek and mild.” Please remember, Being Meek is not Being Weak! Being Meek is submitting ourselves to God, and exercising strength under God’s control.
