What does the Bible say about Jealousy and Envy? (The bad kind of jealousy)

#1 Jealousy and Envy are very dangerous
We must guard against jealousy and never underestimate how destructive jealousy can be, if we make the mistake of allowing it to sneak into our lives.
Proverbs 27:4, NLT Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but jealousy is even more dangerous.




#2 Jealousy and Envy will only bring pain
Proverbs 14:30, NLT A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.

#3 Jealousy and Envy lead to Falsehood & Bitterness
James 3:14, NLT …if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.

#4 Love does not Envy, Love is not Jealous, Love is not Arrogant
1 Corinthians 13:4, NLT Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud.
1 Corinthians 13:4, ESV Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant.

#5 Envy and Jealousy go hand in hand with Confusion and Evil
When we fall into jealousy, our spiritual life suffers greatly, because we are inadvertently inviting confusion and evil in. Left unchecked, evil will wreak havoc in our lives and affect others around us too (God forbid!).
James 3:16, KJV For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

#6 Jealousy and Envy are symptoms of a sinful nature
1 Corinthians 3:3, NLT for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?

#7 Envy and Jealousy – Not ok with God
Romans 13:9a, NLT For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.”
Exodus 20:17, ESV “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
