Dealing with Disappointments: Choosing How our Experiences Affect Us
***
It feels like I’ve recently been hearing endless horrible stories of war, violence, pain, hurts and anger… between nations, friends, spouses, spouses-to-be, family members, and the list goes on. This just really saddens me so much and I am praying and asking for peace. I know this doesn’t come easily sometimes, some situations are really very complex… but with God, all things are possible. Also, if we all tried to play our parts it would make a huge difference in bringing peace.
To all those who have lost loved ones or have suffered in any way whatsoever from all the wars/violence in Israel, Gaza, Parts of India, Pakistan, Asia, Parts of Nigeria, Iraq, Right here in the USA, etc… my heart goes out to you. I pray that you will find strength and a peace that you just can’t explain in your time of anger, hurt and disappointment in people, nations, life, and God. I pray that you will somehow find the strength to go on, the strength to channel your emotions to bring about good and a positive impact, and not just bring about more hatred/animosity. I pray that you will be completely healed, and yes, I pray for an end to all the violence :(!
To all those who are hurting from anything or anyone (including wars as mentioned previously), my heart goes out to you. I pray that you will find peace, strength and healing. When we’ve been terribly hurt or wronged or disappointed we are often really negatively affected by it (whether we admit/realize it or not), and anger, bitterness and strife will often build up in us, usually against the perpetrator(s) and often also against anything/anyone that even remotely reminds us of that event. This eats deep into us and slowly changes us. It affects our quality of and outlook on life; it often also affects our health, our psyche, and just the people we are.
Sometimes the hurt does not even come from a direct action against us. It may be something that was done to someone else/a group of people that just really upset us or angered us because we identify with that person or that group somehow… so it really feels like we were the ones that were actually hurt. For instance, a horrible event happened years and years ago when I was very young. It did not happen to me, but to a friend.
In the past, when I remembered this event, I would shudder and a feeling of intense rage would come over me. In the past, I have just pushed those thoughts away, still angry and upset but choosing not to think about it so that it would not affect my mood. But I recently lay awake thinking about it again – and it just occurred to me to approach the matter a little bit differently from now on. *Praise God for His mercies and grace :)!
I am still extremely saddened by this event, but I no longer wish evil on the perpetrators. Instead, I remember what someone I admire and love very much said one day while praying – something like – “Praying for those who wish evil on us or go about being wicked to us and others… we pray that they will turn away from their ways and come to the knowledge of you”. That just really brought me back to my senses!
It also reminded me of some scriptures:

Matthew 5:43-48 (The Message)
“You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish – to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

John 13:34 (The Message)
“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples – when they see the love you have for each other.”
Romans 12:14, NIV
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
1 Peter 3:9 – NIV
“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
